This is probably better than MyHeritage Family Tree Builder, because you can see the whole tree and it has a cleaner, more appealing layout. I found the interface to be a bit cluttered, and I couldn't work out how to create a simple, big-picture view of the family tree that just showed everyone's names and relations the way I wanted it to. You can also create a new project and fill it out with fictional names. It’s good for exploring your own family tree. This asks your name and the names of your parents and grandparents, and then links you in to existing data provided by other users. In order of usefulness, the ones I looked at are: (used to be called diagrams.io), Lucidchart, and excalidraw. There are plenty of generic diagram tools that are designed for flowcharts etc., that can be used to build a family tree from scratch, but these take a fair bit of fiddling to make it work. I thought I would share my findings here for any others that want to do the same. I'm building a fantasy world, and wanted a free tool that could quickly draw up family trees for the lineage of royal families etc. We also encourage users to register an account.
